Southern Vectis came into being when the Southern Railway bought the Vectis Bus Company in 1929. From then it was always owned by large national concerns and after 1970 was part of the state-owned National Bus Company.
With privatisation in 1986, the company was bought by its management team, and stayed independent until bought
by the Go-Ahead Group in July 2005.
As the principal operator of bus services on the Isle of Wight, Southern Vectis serves the needs of the island’s residents with a really comprehensive network, and we cater for the huge influx of visitors throughout the ever-lengthening tourist season. The company has developed a strong partnership with the Isle of Wight Council and, for example, delivers 2500 children to school each day on behalf of the Council.
We run some great tourist and leisure services with our Island Breezer open top tours. These are at four separate locations. - the Needles tour is said to be 'Britain's most spectacular bus service'. We also operate three themed roadtrains at Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin.
In April 2006 we introduced a new network, with many main routes radiating all over the island from Newport. We are always striving to serve our customers better, with longer hours of operation and better frequencies. We believe we can achieve organic growth in the business and therefore better address the Island’s need to relieve congestion and help with better air quality.
As part of this ongoing development we have introduced the Island’s first 24 hour bus service on three core routes that serve Newport and main towns around the Island on Fridays and Saturdays. This acknowledges the changing social and leisure needs of our customers.
With the creation and development of the network, a new image and marketing strategy was designed by Best Impressions, and this is part of a programme of providing a wider range of high quality information for existing and potential customers.
Southern Vectis Commercials is a stand alone commercial vehicle maintenance and repair facility, aimed at commercial vehicle, bus and coach operators, and has full VOSA approved MOT test facilities.
Southern Vectis is important in the fabric of Island life, committed in its partnership with the Isle of Wight Council to delivers high quality public transport solutions that seek to meet the Island’s travel needs and aspirations now and into the future.
